Staying Sustainable: Spring Break Edition!

Here at UC Berkeley, we are in the throes of Spring Break. For some, this is the prime time for traveling; for others, time to unwind and unload at home. Regardless of how you decide to spend your break, here are a few ways you can plan to practice sustainability:

1. Reusable bottles

The age-old suggestion, though true. Reusable bottles are incredibly versatile and can be used in all kinds of situations. Use it as a water bottle for hikes or other recreational activities. If you have an insulated bottle, you can use it as a thermos for long-lasting cold or hot drinks, snacks, and even meals. Next time you want to grab a drink, check if the place accepts personal cups as well! Some cafes and restaurants allow people to bring personal cups to serve their drinks in, which can save dishes, plastic waste, and money if they offer refunds on any additional taxes or fees.

2. Cooking

During the regular semester, time is often scarce. Take the extra time over break to flex your culinary muscles! Try out a new recipe that’s been saved in your bookmarks or remake an old family favorite. Head to a local farmer’s market for ingredients and inspiration. Make it an event with friends and family. With cooking, you can practice new skills while also making important memories.

3. Public transportation

With spring break often comes travel. While making plans, consider public transportation, such as trains, buses, and services like rental bikes or scooters. Public transportation is incredibly overlooked despite being a valuable option for travel (for both the daily commuter and the excited adventurer). They often offer services for food and go on routes that are great for sightseeing, like the Amtrak coastal rail. Take advantage of the cheaper prices and range of accessibility, while also supporting more environmentally-friendly ways of travel and public services that are important to everyone in the community.

4. Thrifted clothes

Can’t mention shopping without bringing up thrifting! When searching for vacation fits or just wanting to update your wardrobe, always check what can be recycled or upcycled around you. Thrift stores offer great finds for all kinds of clothes and styles—you may even find your new favorite piece! Even before that, break offers a great time to do some spring cleaning. Checking what you already have may uncover an amazing top or jacket in the back of your closet. You can organize a clothing swap with friends as well, making the activity both sustainable and social.

5. Volunteer work

If you’re looking for things to do with your free time, volunteer work can be a meaningful way to spend your break. Many local organizations look for volunteers year-round, such as our partner, Bambino Thrift Shop. Offering your support can be a massive help for these organizations while also helping build community bonds. Get connected to your area and the people around you, and the variety of volunteer opportunities can offer many different and new experiences that you may not be able to have otherwise.
