To embolden aspiring social entrepreneurs on campus and across the globe.
EthiCAL Apparel is a student-run social enterprise from UC Berkeley that provides high-quality screen printing and free design services on sustainable, ethically-made clothing. Our past work has been with both clubs on campus and organizations nationwide. We support entrepreneurs worldwide by lending out our profits as micro-loans. As a business and a student organization in UC Berkeley, we set out to create sustainable change for those in need.
We started in 2010, when two UC Berkeley students were inspired after a summer abroad in Guatemala to create a place where business and social good converged. They launched the Social Entrepreneurship DeCal in Spring 2010, a hybrid course in which students learned about various topics in the field while simultaneously running a social venture called EthiCAL Apparel. Since then, EthiCAL has evolved into the clothing line and custom design service on the UC Berkeley Campus.
The process of funding entrepreneurs, both locally and abroad, starts off on the UC Berkeley campus. We collect our profits from sales events on Sproul and through online custom orders.
Our profits are invested through Kiva as micro-loans for low-income individuals. With that funding, aspiring entrepreneurs in developing countries can launch and expand their own businesses.
Entrepreneurs then return the borrowed loans, and the money feeds back into the cycle. Through micro-loans, we hope to embolden entrepreneurs all over the world to successfully create their own businesses.
